Such as free one-year anti-virus protection (which is always good to have), an all-in-one design, and/or a touch screen.

All these are fine if you just need something basic to get you up and running and to have fun with when you’re at home.  But not ideal when you’re in the office because that computer may lack some features that are needed for an office environment.

Also, Hp computers tend to be at a lower price compared to other brands.  Which makes them even more appealing for home users.

Lenovo

This brand of PC is more for the office environment.

Custom Built PCs

This is more for gamers and techies than for any other group.  Sometimes, the branded computers just don’t have the specs that suit your needs, in which case, building a PC for yourself might be your best option.

This gives you the most flexibility out of any other option, and that’s why many users opt for this option.

Keep in mind, however, that this can be very expensive, as the pricier hardware components can add up. One of the main advantages of building your own PC is the ability to customize it exactly to your needs.  

Want more storage space? No problem! Need a fast and powerful processor for gaming? You got it. By hand-picking each component, you have complete control over every aspect of your computer’s performance.

Moreover, building a PC can be an incredibly rewarding experience.

It allows you to gain a deeper understanding of how computers work and gain a sense of accomplishment when you successfully assemble all the parts and power on your creation for the first time. It’s like bringing your own little Frankenstein to life…” It’s alive, it’s alive!

I’ve done this myself a few times, and that feeling of accomplishment is so awesome.  I recommend trying it at least once if you’re technically inclined or curious.  Or you can get someone to build one for you.  There are many tech companies out there that’ll do that for you.

• RAM (Random Access Memory) – Used for short-term storage.  The more RAM you have the more applications it can run simultaneously without slowing down.  Anything 8GB or more is good.
• Hard Drive – This is where all your data will be stored on your computer.  SSD (Solid State Drives) are awesome, and much faster than traditional hard drives.  500 GB or more is great for the average user.  For gamers and multi-media users, I’d recommend 1 TB or more.
• Graphics/Video Card – This is the component that allows you to have video output through your monitors.  For the average user, the basic video cards that come built-in with the computer that you purchase will do a great job of providing good video output.  For the video editors and gamers, however, you will need a more high-end video card.

Again, keep in mind that hardware specifications go hand in hand with the type of tasks you’ll be performing on your computer. If you’re planning on using your PC for basic activities like web browsing and document editing, a mid-range processor with 8GB of RAM should suffice.

However, if you’re into graphic design or video editing without any lags or delays, then opting for a high-performance CPU with 16GB or more RAM would be a wise decision.

More Powerful Performance

I believe desktops are more powerful than laptops and other mobile devices. 

And I have used all of them over the years.  You simply get better performance on a desktop than on a laptop.  Sure, the technology for laptop computers has drastically improved over the years.  Making them a solid contender for the desktop.

Other than the mobility feature that laptops have, and a few that comes with a touchscreen, there aren’t many other advantages they have over desktop computers.  People purchase laptops primarily because of their mobility features, not for better performance. 

Laptop computers are usually purchased in conjunction with a desktop computer, so you can take work with you, while you’re away from the office.  It makes for better convenience.

But if mobility is not a concern for you and you have a desk that you work from on a consistent basis, then a desktop is your best bet.  You’ll get better performance, and you’ll have more options to work with.

The reality is that desktop computers boast incredible processing power, over laptop computers.  Making them perfect for resource-intensive tasks such as graphic design, video editing, and even gaming, if you wanted to have some fun while you work.

Moreover, the convenience of having a dedicated workspace with an ergonomic keyboard and mouse (which I’ll be talking more about in the next section) cannot be overstated.  Sure, you can do this with a laptop, but that would defeat the purpose of getting one, since a laptop already has a built-in keyboard and touchpad (for the mouse), for mobility purposes.

Ergonomic Design

As I’ve alluded to earlier, a desktop computer gives you the ability to set up your workspace to be more ergonomically friendly.

Let’s face it, we spend a ton of time in front of our computers on a daily basis, while we’re at work.  This will take a toll on our bodies over time, particularly on our hands and wrists.  With a desktop, you have a plethora of options to choose from when it comes to ergonomic keyboards and mouse.

Speaking from experience, I’ve had to invest in some ergonomic keyboards and mouse for myself, because I spend so much time writing at my computer.  My desktop computer of course.  This is also an option with a laptop computer, but as I mentioned before, that defeats the purpose of having a laptop.

When you add all these additional peripheral devices to a laptop, now you’re making it more stationary and starting to resemble a desktop computer. 

And I’ve seen it on many occasions. 

Executives that travel a lot, take their laptops away with them, while on travel.  When they’re back at the office, they connect their laptop to a docking station, that’s connected to different peripheral devices, such as a monitor, a keyboard and mouse, and even speakers.

This makes your laptop more versatile, as it can be both mobile and stationary.  But it’s still limited.

Better Graphics

With a laptop computer, you are limited to the graphics card that it comes equipped with.  Sure you can purchase one with a pretty good graphics card, that’ll do a good job in the long run, but that will make for a very expensive laptop computer.

A desktop on the other hand allows you the ability to upgrade your video or graphics card to higher quality one, without breaking the bank.  You wouldn’t need to get a whole new computer just to upgrade the video card like you would for a laptop.  All you need to do is simply replace the video card.

When you have a better video or graphics card, it makes for a much better experience for video streaming, video editing, and gaming.  So, if any of these interest you, then investing in a desktop computer would be ideal for you.  

With a desktop computer, upgrading a graphics card is as simple as purchasing a new one and installing it.  The connectors for a desktop graphics card use a PCIe slot, which is standard for all desktop motherboards.  

On a laptop computer, you’re stuck with the video card it comes equipped with.  Upgrading or replacing a video card for a laptop usually means replacing the entire laptop with a new one.

Upgrade Options

We have already established that laptops are good for their convenience and portability. 

Desktops on the other hand give you versatility that can greatly enhance your computing experience. When you upgrade components of a desktop computer, you are increasing the quality and performance of that desktop.

What desktop computers have over laptops, is larger cases, that provide room for different size components like processors and graphic cards (which we just talked about).  Not only do their cases provide room to house these components, but they also accommodate the ability to upgrade, add to, or replace those components independently.

To be fair, you can upgrade and replace components on a laptop computer, as well.  You can upgrade the RAM (Random Access Memory) and hard drive disk on laptops, but that’s about all you can replace.

You can upgrade just about every internal component of a desktop computer that’s connected to its motherboard.  In fact, you can even replace the motherboard, if you so desire.  There are some exceptions to consider, however. 

With branded desktop computers, such as Dell, Hp, etc., replacing the motherboard isn’t as easy to do.  Their boards are proprietary and customized to suit their specific desktop systems. So you would have to go through them to replace the motherboard, and that’s if they deem your mother is defective.

However, for generic-built desktops, such as gaming systems (which have been gaining a lot of popularity in recent years), all components are equally replaceable.

That’s the wonderful versatility desktops have over laptops.   

Budget Friendly

One of the key benefits of choosing a desktop over other options is its affordability.

Your money will go a lot farther, purchasing a desktop computer, than it would with a laptop or other mobile devices.  When you do the comparison, you will see that desktop computers tend to be significantly cheaper than laptops or tablets with similar specifications.

With their larger size and ability to accommodate various hardware components at lower costs, you can get more bang for your buck when purchasing a desktop.  This makes them an ideal choice for those looking to stick within their budget, without compromising performance.

I know it’s hard to think about getting a desktop when there has been such a heavy emphasis on a wireless connection to the Internet.  I mean WiFi technology has definitely improved a lot in recent years.  

If being wireless is a concern for you, as it pertains to a desktop, many desktop computers today come with a built-in WiFi adapter.  Even if your particular desktop doesn’t have built-in WiFi, you can also purchase an external WiFi adapter, they’re pretty inexpensive.

But let’s get back to the price comparisons.

Desktop computers are significantly more affordable than their portable counterparts.  Due to their larger size and “lack of portability”, manufacturers can offer them at lower price points without compromising on performance.  This is where they compensate for the desktop computer being a stationary computer.

This means that even with a limited budget, you can still get a high-quality machine that meets all your computing requirements.  And again, you can always get a wireless adapter for your desktop, if that’s important for you.

Finally, desktops are a good investment in terms of longevity.  They tend to last much longer than other mobile devices, smartphones included.

Whether you rely on your computer for work or personal use, this can be a real pain when it happens.  There are several common reasons why your PC computer will not start up properly, and fortunately, many of them can be fixed relatively easily.

In this article, we’ll look at three of the most common reasons why your PC may not be starting up, as well as some tips for troubleshooting and fixing these problems.

From issues with the power supply to software issues and beyond.  We’ll cover everything you need to know to get your computer back up and running.

Power Issues

This would be one of the first places to start, as it is probably the most obvious.

Your PC not starting up could mean a variety of things to different people.  Maybe it turns on but doesn’t boot up all the way.  Maybe it keeps rebooting when you’re trying to boot up.  Or maybe it doesn’t turn on at all. 

If your PC doesn’t power on at all, then we definitely need to look at the possible power issues that could be causing it.

Let’s start with the basics, the power cord.

Most if not all PC desktop computer uses a universal power chord, so replacing them is very easy to do.  Replace the power chord with a good one, and if possible, try plugging your PC into another power outlet to eliminate the possibility of the wall outlet being the culprit.

For laptop computers, the power chord, or AC adapter is more proprietary and would require you to contact the manufacturer for a replacement.

If after replacing the power chord and plugging it into another wall unit, you’re still getting issues with the PC starting up, now we need to put our attention on the Power Supply Unit (PSU).  It’s very common for PSUs to go bad after some time.

 The best troubleshooting method for PSUs is to replace them.  It simply isn’t worth attempting to repair or troubleshoot them, unless you’re an electrician.  And even then I still wouldn’t recommend troubleshooting them.  The time and potential electric harm you subject yourself to, simply isn’t worth it.

You can purchase a new PSU for around $150, in some cases even lower than that.  Regardless of how much you pay to get a new one, it’s worth the investment, compared to trying to repair one yourself.

If that doesn’t solve your issue, then we need to turn our attention to other hardware components.

Hardware Failure

Another main area that could be contributing to your PC computer not starting is hardware.

The PSU is actually a hardware component, but since it deals directly with the power source of the computer, it was best to discuss it in the power issues category.  But it can also be considered a hardware component for sure.

But let’s talk about the other hardware components that could be contributing to your PC computer not starting.

RAM (Random Access Memory)

We all know that RAM is used for short-term memory for your PC computer.  Information is stored here by opened applications when the computer is powered on.  RAM chips can go bad for a variety of reasons.  It could be from everyday wear and tear, that particular RAM module is bad, or some kind of ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) has happened. 

ESD doesn’t happen very often, but there are some rare cases where it does happen.

Troubleshooting RAM is one of the easiest hardware components to troubleshoot, so I always like to start here.  Just like the PSU, it’s best to replace the RAM with a new one, if you suspect the RAM is the culprit.

To test if the RAM may be the cause, pull out each RAM module one at a time, and reboot the computer.  Do that for each RAM and see if you notice any difference.  If you do discover that one or all of the RAM modules are bad, then go ahead and get those replaced.

The best place to purchase new RAM is over at www.crucial.com.  Not only can you purchase new RAM there, but you can also find out what specific RAM module your computer uses.  Their website will scan your computer and tell the max amount of RAM your computer can take, the type of RAM it uses, and how much it’ll cost.

You can either purchase the RAM directly from their site, go to your local tech or electronics store, or you can purchase RAM online from Amazon.

Hard Drive

This is a bit tougher to troubleshoot because the hard drive contains all your data.  If it goes bad then you run the risk of losing all your data.  You also have to factor in reloading the OS (Operating System) after replacing it with a new one.

But before we determine that the hard drive needs to be replaced, let’s do some troubleshooting first.

The first thing to check is that the hard drive is securely connected.  This part of the troubleshooting process requires opening your computer to get to the inside components.  If you’re using a standard hard drive, check the SATA cables to ensure they’re connected properly.  If possible, try switching it with another available cable.

For SSD drives, ensure that the cable is securely connected.  If it is, then do the same as you did with a standard hard drive, replace that cable with a known good cable, and then try to boot your computer and see if that helps.  If your SSD drive is an M.2 drive, then it’s connected directly to the motherboard via a PCIe slot.  Pull the hard drive out completely and re-seat it back into the slot and reboot.

One final test that you can do is try booting from an external device like a USB drive or DVD-ROM.  This will help determine if the problem lies with your hard drive specifically or with another component in your system.

If you have determined that the hard drive is bad and needs to be replaced, ensure that you do a full backup if at all possible.

Determine what type of new hard drive your PC computer uses, and proceed to get a new one.

Motherboard

This is the main board of your computer, that everything connects to.  Troubleshooting a motherboard means checking all the other components that are connected to it.  One of the first things to check is the power cables it’s connected to.  This is supplied by the PSU (Power Supply Unit), which I have covered in the earlier section of this article.

If you determine that the source of power is bad, then replace the entire PSU.

Next, try removing all RAM and video cards from the motherboard’s connectors.  Try booting your computer without those components and see if your system will load successfully.

If any of the two troubleshooting tips failed to solve your problem, then it’s likely you have a bad motherboard. 

The best resolution for a bad motherboard is to replace it with a new one.  Keep in mind, however, that getting a new motherboard is equivalent to getting a new computer.  So definitely consider your options here, and see if it would be more economical to invest in a new computer as opposed to replacing your motherboard.

One of the first places to start is to try to repair the OS.

To get access to those system tools requires you to reboot your computer and hit a combination of keys on your keyboard to boot from that installation media.  In most cases, it’s usually the F8 or F2 keys, that you need to tap repeatedly as soon as your computer starts to boot up. 

In some instances, you may not need to hit any keys at all, as your system BIOS has been configured to boot your computer from CD ROMs and external drives first.

Once you’re in, follow the prompts that allow you to do a Startup Repair for Windows.

So we’ve already discovered that more computer memory allows for faster access and retrieval of data.

Programs store data in memory temporarily in order for them to operate efficiently.  The more memory that’s available, the better that program can run.  This improves the user’s overall experience because they can navigate through their applications faster, and more efficiently.  

Having more memory available on your computer can greatly improve multitasking capabilities, as well.  We all have several programs installed on our computers at any given time.  Additionally, we tend to have several of those programs simultaneously while we’re using our computers.

What Are Cookies?

The term “cookie” was first used to describe small pieces of data stored on web servers back in 1994, by tech expert Lou Montulli.  He came up with the idea while working at Netscape (remember them?) to help websites to remember visitors.

The inspiration came from a fortune cookie.  He liked what the fortune cookie represented, a snack that contains a snippet of advice or instruction inside.  Just like fortune cookies, computer cookies often contain helpful information which helps websites remember important details about you, such as your preferences or login information.

Many moons later, websites are still using cookies today to remember users.

How the whole process works are websites that use cookies stores some small text files on the user’s computer after visiting the site.  This is done using the web browser that you’re using.  In most cases, the files are harmless, unless it’s from a sketchy website, in which case you don’t want to visit.

What this does essentially, is allow websites to remember users for future visits to that same site.  Most of the websites that use cookies will notify you that it uses.  If you’re on the internet, visiting different websites, chances are you have seen a few of these notifications already.

Origin of The Name

Cookie itself was derived from the term “magic cookies”, which had a completely different meaning.  So after, Montulli developed the code script for what we now call cookie, he chose the name because he thought it would be easier for people to remember than a complex technical term.

Types of Cookies (Computer Cookies)

Now that we have defined what computer cookies are, now let’s dive in and discover the different types that are available and what that means for you.  This is was actually to my surprise as well, that there are several different types of cookies, all serving different purposes.

So we’re going to do through each one, and describe their purpose.

Session Cookie

This type of cookie only lasts for as long as your browsing session – once you close your browser window, it disappears.  Session cookies typically store information such as which items are in your online shopping cart or whether you’re logged into a website.

They’re also called transient cookies because they last for such a short time.

Persistent Cookie

Next on our list is the persistent cookie.  Unlike session cookies, these little guys stick around even after you close your browser window.  They’re useful for keeping track of user preferences and settings over time.

For example, if you prefer to view a certain website in dark mode every time you visit, a persistent cookie will remember that choice for future visits, and present the site to you in dark mode.  Because they’re so useful in keeping track of user preferences, they’re sometimes called tracking cookies.

First-Party Cookie

These cookies are generated by default on the website that you visit directly and stored on your computer’s browser cache.

Site owners use first-party cookies to track user interactions, such as which pages were visited, their preferred settings, or even their location.  They also enable website customization based on user preferences like language settings or location data.

Third-Party Cookie

Third-party cookies are small files stored in your computer system by websites other than the one you’re currently visiting.  Think of ads on a website, or even embedded videos.

They help advertisers track your online behavior, enabling them to present targeted ads that align with your interests.  Retargeting marketing methods use third-party cookies to get their information in front of you everywhere on the web.

The main difference here between first-party cookies and third-party cookies is that first-party cookies are created by the website you visit, they store user login data and preferences like language, region, or currency.

On the other hand, third-party cookies are created by other entities using that website.  There are also second-party cookies that are not talked about much, but it is essentially when two different parties use each other’s first-party cookie to use as a suitable accommodation for the user.  So, second-party cookies don’t really stand alone on their own, it’s just sharing of first-party data.

Secure Cookie

When it comes to security, this cookie stands out from the rest.

Secure cookies are encrypted versions of regular HTTP cookies that can only be transmitted over an HTTPS connection.  This means that any sensitive information stored in the cookie (such as login credentials) will remain protected from malicious attacks by hackers or other third-party entities.

This is an effective way to tell if a particular website is secure or not.  Just look for the “S” in HTTPS followed by the website’s URL.

There are other types of cookies, but those are just combinations of the main ones that you see listed here.

Benefits of Cookies

There are several benefits of cookies that we’re going to discuss here in this section.  There are some misconceptions about cookies and that they do more harm than good.  So we’re going to clear up some of those misconceptions by going over the many benefits to you.

1. Personalization: Cookies allow websites to remember your preferences, such as language settings or font size, providing a personalized experience every time you visit.  This can go a long way in keeping you a loyal visitor to that site because your settings and preferences stay intact.
2. Efficiency: With cookies, web pages load faster because they don’t have to retrieve information from scratch each time you visit a site.
3. Analytics: Websites can use cookies to track user behavior and collect data on how their site is being used.  This helps them make improvements for a better overall user experience.  This is more for the developers than it is for the users.  But in the end, it ultimately benefits the user.
4. User Convenience:  In addition to remembering websites, cookies can also remember forms that you have filled out in the past, and can help you fill out future forms much faster with the autofill feature.

Potential Risks

OK, let’s get to the bad stuff with cookies.  I know that’s what most people want to hear, they want you to give them the dirt.  It’s important to understand, however, that cookies themselves aren’t inherently bad, it’s what people who are “bad” can do with them.

But here are some potential risks that you should consider regarding cookies:

1. Privacy Issues: Some cookies can track your movements across different websites without your consent or knowledge.  This kind of unauthorized tracking raises concerns about online privacy.
2. Security Concerns: There’s always the possibility of hackers intercepting cookie data and using it for their own purposes such as identity theft or phishing scams.  This is what I was alluding to earlier.  Cookie files aren’t bad, it’s when a hacker compromises your computer’s security and can gain access to this information.  So ensure that you have anti-virus software installed to keep your systems protected in real time.

Removing Cookies From Your Computer

This process is done within the browser itself.  I’ll provide some instructions on how to do so using Google Chrome since it’s one of the most used Internet browsers worldwide.

• Open Chrome and look in the upper right for the 3 dots.  It’s usually right next to your profile photo.
• Click those 3 dots and select Settings.
• Click on Privacy and Security.
• Then click Cookies and Other Site Data.
• Click See all site data and permissions.
• Finally, click the Clear all data button.

Doing this will clear all data cookies stored on your computer.  Here’s a video, showing how to remove cookies using Microsft Edge.

Conclusion

Although having cookies stored on your computer helps websites remember you and the settings you may have set, if you prefer not to have them on your computer at all, you can always remove them from your computer via your web browser.

You may be in an environment where you have a desktop, and you simply cannot run an ethernet cable to get your desktop connected to your network.  I know what that’s like, and have loved turning that desktop into a wireless device.

So not only is it possible, but it’s also pretty cool to see once you’ve pulled it off.

And you don’t need to be an expert in order to understand this or make it happen.  Even as a beginner, this article will make you look like a pro.  So let’s get started.

Benefits of a Wi-Fi Desktop

A Wi-Fi desktop computer can bring a range of benefits to your home or office.

The obvious one is that you can access the Internet on your desktop without the hassle of any wires.  You almost feel like you’re on a laptop, with the exception of a battery pack.  Who knows, that might be an option for desktops in the near future.

The reality is that a Wi-Fi desktop provides convenience.

You can set up your desktop computer virtually anywhere you want to in your office, and not have to worry about how long of an Ethernet cable you’re going to need as we did in the past.  I remember how much of an issue that was when setting up new desktop computers for clients.  We had to ensure that we had long enough ethernet cables to connect that desktop.

The other challenge there was to keep it all neat and clean.  Not so with a Wi-Fi desktop.

All you need is to get it connected to your Wi-Fi router or Access point like you would with any other wireless device, and you’re up and running on the Internet.  With just a few clicks of the mouse, you’ll be ready to go!

Install Wireless Adapter

Most desktop computers only come with an integrated Ethernet port that allows for a wired connection to get access to the Internet.  So in order to turn your desktop computer into a Wi-Fi machine, you’ll need to install and configure a Wi-Fi adapter.

There are two types of Wi-Fi adapters that you can install on your desktop, an external adapter or an internal adapter.  Let’s talk about each in-depth, so you can see which is the best option for you.

External Wireless Adapter

This option is the easiest one, and most people would probably choose this option for their desktops.  External wireless adapters are fairly inexpensive and can be purchased at your local electronic store or online at reasonable prices.

To install an external wireless adapter to your desktop computer, all you need is an open USB port.  Once connected, this device will now grant you access to the internet via a secure Wi-Fi connection.  In most cases, they come equipped with some type of installation software to configure the device, so it can work effectively with your desktop computer.

In other cases, it can be as simple as a plug-and-play, and your computer’s Operating System will be able to detect it and install the appropriate drivers to make the device work.

The main benefits of using an external wireless adapter are, they’re usually very affordable and easy to install.  There are no technical skills required to install it, and you can be connected to the Internet wirelessly in a matter of minutes! 

Internal Wireless Adapter (Card)

This requires a little more tech savviness to pull off.

An internal wireless adapter requires you to open the CPU (Central Processing Unit) box of your desktop and install the wireless card.  Given that it has to be installed into the CPU box, it’s not an adapter at this point.  Now it’s referred to as a wireless card because it’s an internal installation.

In most cases, all you need to pull this off is a Phillips screwdriver, and an open PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) slot on the desktop’s motherboard.  If you don’t already have a set of Phillips screwdrivers, you can pick one up pretty cheap online for under $20.00.

Once the wireless card is installed properly, the computer should recognize it automatically and install the appropriate drivers.  Similarly to the external wireless adapter, an internal wireless card may also come with accompanying software to install and configure your wireless card properly.

Now all that’s needed after it’s installed, is to connect it to your Wi-Fi router.  This entire process should take you no longer than 30 minutes, at most 1 hour, if you’re a complete novice.

Purchase a Desktop with Built-in Wi-Fi

Many manufacturers are building their desktops with built-in Wi-Fi capabilities.  It’s not a default configuration for a desktop to have built-in Wi-Fi like a laptop does, however, it’s very much an option request for your new desktop to come equipped with Wi-Fi technology.  It’s more common today than it was a decade ago.

As you can see, there are several options that you can choose from, as far as desktop computers with built-in Wi-Fi.  Most, if not all major manufacturers are making this an option, as they know the demand for it is increasing.

Connecting Your Wi-Fi Desktop

This one may be pretty obvious to most, but there are some readers that may need some additional instructions to get their Wi-Fi desktop connected. 

Just like with any other wireless device, your Wi-Fi desktop should automatically pick up your wireless network.  Within Windows, this is usually at the bottom right corner of the screen, next to the time and date.

The wireless bracket is an indication that your desktop now has Wi-Fi capabilities.  Find your wireless signal from your router, and input your network password (assuming you have one and you know what it is), and you should now be up and running wirelessly from your Wi-Fi desktop!
