Interested in IT Consulting Services? Awesome. This post is for you.
People often ask me why I do IT Consulting or the reason I started Advanced-PCs. There are several reasons, but for the sake of time, I’ll share a quick story with you.
It’s been almost 20 years now since I’ve been in this profession, as an IT professional. I’m still young, but I was very young when I got started.
I interned at different companies while attending college, which helped hone my tech skills. Getting the hands-on experience of troubleshooting definitely gave me the confidence I needed to continue down this path.
Even more important, what made me fall in love with this profession was the difference I was making for other people. Positively impacting an individual and their business, using my tech-skills has always been rewarding for me.
Not to mention, the process has always been fun.
Memory Lane
No, I’m not talking about computer memory here, at least not yet (I know, play on words).
Back when I first started, I remember reading a lot of tech books so I could better understand computers and how they work. My very first tech book was Build Your Own Pentium III PC (still have it to this day!).
I was very fascinated with the hardware back then. Something about motherboards, CPUs, hard drives and RAM (Random Access Memory) chips was very appealing to me.
I simply couldn’t get enough of it.
However, all those books I read and the research I did, via the internet (Yahoo was the leading search engine back then) was good, but it was theory knowledge. I had no real experience and was starving to get my hands dirty.
As I mentioned, I honed my skills during my internships. But let me tell you, I completely sucked when I started out…
First Time on the Job
During my first internship, I’d go out on the floor to troubleshoot a problem and wouldn’t have the slightest idea what to do. It was at that moment I realized there’s a BIG difference between “book” knowledge and “experience”.
You simply cannot learn experience from a book (which is why I’m not a fan of certifications being a component of competence).
I’d sit there trying to apply all that I’ve read, and in most cases, nothing would work. Sometimes, the user would be sitting there looking at me like….”dude what’s the hold-up?”
To bail myself out I’d call backup. My manager.
In the world of tech support or field technician as it’s sometimes called, you’re on your own, when you’re “in the field”. After a day or two of basic training and shadowing a more experienced technician, you’re expected to get it and be ready to go.
So, calling backup would only work for that first week.
After that, you’d pretty much have to figure it out on your own, which I did. But it was painful.
However, I’m forever thankful for those years of experience. They taught me a lot about computers, network, troubleshooting and most important, customer service. A skill set that allowed me to further grow in my chosen field as an IT professional.
Present Day
Now 20 years later, I’ve taken those skill set I learned both as an intern and as an employee (I’ve been fortunate to work for some of the most reputable IT and Engineering firms) and turned it into a service.
As I mentioned, there’s a lot of reward that comes with being able to solve IT related issues for individuals and businesses alike.
Being able to make a business operate better, because of my skill set (which took me 20 years to craft by the way), is the real reason I decided to become an IT Consultant.
Hence, the creation of Advanced-PCs.
I also saw a void for good customer service in the industry. This fueled my passion even more as an IT professional.
How is My Story Relevant?
You may be asking, “What does this have to do with IT Consulting?” My answer to that is everything really. I mean if you were interested in doing business with an IT company, wouldn’t you want to know a little about the owner’s history?
Or at least find out “why” that company provides the service they do?
I would.
A person becomes more relatable when you know their story. You know the old saying, people do business with people they know, like and trust. Well, this is you getting to know us, as an IT Company.
The like and trust part comes later, once we start to develop a relationship.
IT Consulting Services Defined
IT Consulting services is not just about fixing your computers and solving some Windows or other OS related problems.
It’s more than that.
It’s helping you make the right decision for you and your business, as it relates to technology.
Just look at how your business operates today. Don’t you have a computer there at your desk? Heck…how are you reading this article?
RIght from your computer (or smartphone).
…how are most transactions conducted today?
Electronically.
It’s a transfer of numbers from one bank to another.
Everything that was paper-based, 10 to 20 years ago are now in electronic format. This new format is considered data.
The devices that house this data (computers, servers etc.) will need to be working, at all times. Not only that, we need to make sure you’re getting the right technology for your business.
Oh, and of course, having the right protection in place. There’s nothing worse than getting hacked…Ransome style.
So you see how important our job is?
Not only are we responsible for your computer equipment, and networking equipment (in some cases phones). We’re also responsible for helping you choose the right technology, appropriate for your business.
It’s great you talked about the advantage when it comes to making the right decisions when it comes to technology and a business succeeding at the same time. Another thing to consider is that having someone take a look at your IT-related items would also help you consider how to be able to do business with other companies. If I had the chance to try and get my company a better standing then I wouldn’t hesitate to hire an IT consulting service.
